Introduction

Welcome to RestFlags — a feature-flag, targeting and experimentation platform. RestFlags lets you ship code continuously, decouple deploys from releases, roll features out gradually, target specific audiences, and run A/B experiments — all without redeploying your application.

Why feature flags?

A feature flag is a switch in your code. Instead of if (true), you write if (restflags.eval("new-checkout")). RestFlags decides — per user, per environment — what that switch returns. This means you can:

  • Deploy dark — merge unfinished code behind an off flag.
  • Release gradually — turn a feature on for 5% of users, then 50%, then 100%.
  • Target precisely — show a feature only to internal staff, a beta cohort, or users in a specific country or plan.
  • Kill instantly — if something breaks, flip the flag off. No rollback, no redeploy.
  • Experiment — split traffic between variants and measure which performs best.

Core concepts

ConceptWhat it is
WorkspaceYour organisation's container for everything below. All data is scoped to a workspace.
FlagA named switch with one or more possible values (variations).
EnvironmentAn isolated copy of a flag's state — RestFlags has development, staging and production.
VariationOne possible value a flag can serve (e.g. true/false, or control/treatment).
Targeting ruleA condition that serves a specific variation to a matching audience.
SegmentA reusable, named audience you can reference from any flag's rules.
ExperimentAn A/B test that splits traffic across variations and measures a metric.
API keyA secret token your application uses to evaluate flags through the API.

The three environments

Every flag exists independently in three environments:

  • Development — for local and pre-production work.
  • Staging — for QA and pre-release verification.
  • Production — what your real users see.

Turning a flag on in development has no effect on production. This lets you test targeting safely before promoting it.

Finding your way around

Once you sign in you land in the dashboard. The left sidebar groups every feature:

  • Workspace — Flags, Segments, Experiments, Audit log, Metrics.
  • Account — API keys, Team, Billing, API docs.

A few things appear on every page:

  • Environment switcher — the Dev / Staging / Prod toggle in the top bar selects which environment's data you are viewing and editing.
  • Global search — press ⌘K (or Ctrl+K) anywhere to jump to any flag, segment, experiment or page.
  • Theme toggle — switch between light and dark mode.
